Offshore Wind in Taiwan

Taiwan has abundant wind resources, however, a lack of space on land means that most major developments are offshore. The government has set a target of 40-50 GW offshore wind development by 2050. Thereby, Taiwan aims to become the second-largest offshore wind market in Asia after Mainland China in new offshore installations to 2030.

Wind power is a major industry in Taiwan. In few years, a fully supply chain has been established and unlike other Asian markets selecting national protectionism, Taiwan is open for international business. As of October 2023, the capacity of offshore wind power installations was 1723MW. Two offshore wind auction phases have been completed with the third underway. Two projects have been completed, while the remaining five from phase 2 are under construction. Phase 3.1 auction phase is complete while 3.2 is expected to be auctioned in April 2024. The auction rules for 3.2 were revealed in November 2023.

Key developers including Ørsted, CIP, Corio, SRE, Skyborn, EDF, Iberdrola, Vena, Bluefloat, and two turbine OEMs: Vestas and Siemens Energy have significant investments in Taiwan. Danish companies have diverse roles in this market including cable manufacturing, engineering design, maritime construction, etc.
